A lot of times, operators will use steel rollers on a rigging dolly because of durability. The problem with using rollers that are made of steel is that they scratch the surface of the floor; even with floors that are made up of sturdy, durable material like concrete.
The rollers on a rigging dolly can damage floor surfaces in various ways. Generally when a rigging dolly is transporting loads, the rollers are not always aligned correctly causing the rollers to move out of line and cause damage to the floor. Another factor that may cause this damage is the footprint of the rigging dolly; most are small. When heavy equipment is placed on one small rigging dolly, the amount of pressure is enormous. This damages the floor because so much weight is centered on the rigging dolly which on a small amount of floor space. In a case such as this one, the rigging dolly acts as the center of gravity and the pressure punctures the floor.
Damage may also continue to the surface of the floor through equipment or material fragments that may be on the floor. Depending on material of the rigging dolly rollers and how the rigging dolly rolls over material, these particles will either stick or get caught in the rollers. The rollers of the rigging dolly will then drag the debris causing scratches to the floor when moving the load. The best type of rollers to use on a rigging dolly is rollers that do not mark floors and ones that have a larger footprint. Having a roller with a wider footprint will help to spread the weight of the equipment and decrease or completely eliminate floor damage.
